Marco Silva lined up to take over at Benfica

Benfica Blog
With Benfica looking to salvage their season and capture another league championship, the struggling club look to set to part ways with current manager Bruno Lage. The main candidate to replace him is said to be Marco Silva according to various reports coming from Portuguese papers in the last 24 hours. Lage has struggled to get the most out of his club since February, the struggles have seen Benfica blow a seven point lead atop the league to sitting three points behind current league leaders FC Porto. Benfica has only managed to win three of their last ten league games and earned a total of thirteen points out of a possible thirty.

With this weeks devastating last minute 4-3 home loss to Santa Clara looking to be the final nail in Lage's managerial career with the team. Lage hailed only just last season as the savior by turning the club into an offensive juggernaut and leading them from behind to the league championship after taking over in January, looks like a man who is out of ideas and time. Lage's league managerial record with Benfica before entering this last stretch of ten games was an impressive 35 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss but in the world of Portuguese football, it is all about what have you done for me lately.

Enter Marco Silva into the clubs sight lines, Silva is currently unemployed after being sacked by Everton in December and last managed in Portugal in 2015 when he was at the helm of Sporting. Silva's hiring would see a change in the clubs formation as his preferred 4-2-3-1 would alter Lage's 4-4-1-1. Benfica have yet to open talks with Marco Silva as club President Luis Filipe Vieira looks to first sort out the departure of Lage who's contract goes until the summer of 2024. Silva in addition to Everton and Sporting has also managed Estoril, Olympiakos, Hull City and Watford over the years.
