Benfica target Shakhtar winger Lucas Ferreira for next season

Benfica Blog
Benfica are showing strong interest again in 20-year-old Brazilian winger Lucas Ferreira as they look to strengthen their attack for the 2026-27 season. The Eagles return back for the youngster after having their bid during the winter window rejected by the Ukrainian club and view the highly-rated Shakhtar Donetsk talent as an ideal replacement for departing players, drawn to his explosive pace, technical ability, and versatility on both wings.

Ferreira, who joined Shakhtar from Sao Paulo in August 2025 for €10 million, has impressed in his debut campaign. In the 2025-26 Ukrainian Premier League, the left-footed attacker has scored 2 goals and provided 1 assist in 15 appearances (around 562 minutes played). He has also contributed in European competitions. Shakhtar are demanding around €18 million to sell the player, whose contract runs until 2030.

Benfica may need to meet or approach Shakhtar's current valuation to secure the young talent, who represents a long-term investment with significant upside. Benfica's winter offer of €12 million was rejected by Shakhtar as manager Jose Mourinho hoped to add the player to the squad. With likely departures of Dodi Lukebakio and Bruma this summer, the club will be light on the wing side and want to add some talent to the current squad.

Benfica eye Saint-Etienne winger Zuriko Davitashvili amid strong competition

Benfica Blog
Benfica continue to show keen interest in Saint-Etienne winger Zuriko Davitashvili as they seek to bolster their attacking options for next season. The 25-year-old Georgian international was linked to the Lisbon side during the winter window and has been a standout performer in Ligue 2 during the 2025-26 season, contributing significantly to Saint-Etienne’s promotion push.

In 29 league appearances (24 starts), Davitashvili has notched an impressive 14 goals and 5 assists, adding another goal and assist in cup competitions. His market value could hover around €10 to €15 million, though Saint-Etienne who is holding a contract until 2028 with the player could go as high as demanding €20 million or more to part ways with their star man.

Other clubs circling the dynamic right-footed winger include Everton, Fenerbahce, Besiktas, Lille, Monaco, Olympiacos and Panathinaikos, creating would looks to be a competitive transfer market.

Davitashvili excels with blistering pace, technical dribbling, has agility for quick direction changes and clinical finishing from wide areas or by cutting inside. His vision and creativity make him a constant threat on the field and earned him the Ligue 2 Player of the Season honors just last week. Although he can struggle in duels with stronger defenders and be inconsistent in decision making, adding Davitashvili would be a major coup by Benfica this summer.

Benfica finish league season undefeated but its a total disappointment

In a campaign defined by remarkable consistency yet haunted by missed opportunities, Benfica completed the 2025-26 Portuguese League season undefeated but finished a shocking third place, condemning them to the UEFA Europa League next season. The Eagles played 34 matches without defeat, recording 23 wins and 11 draws for 80 points. Yet rivals FC Porto (88 points) and Sporting (82 points) edged them out for the top two spots.

Despite the unbeaten run, a feat that would normally guarantee silverware, Benfica's inability to convert dominance into victories against more opposition proved costly. Fans watched in frustration as several draws against mid-table sides proved decisive. The disappointment is compounded by major off-field uncertainty. Manager Jose Mourinho, who returned to Portuguese football with high expectations, is strongly linked with a move to Real Madrid. Los Blancos are reportedly preparing a lucrative offer to bring the "Special One" back to La Liga amid their own transitional period. Mourinho's departure would mark another turbulent chapter for Benfica.

Adding to the turmoil, veteran defender and team captain Nicolas Otamendi will not renew his contract and leave the club this summer for River Plate, creating a significant void in the heart of the backline. The 38 year-old Argentine World Cup winner, a pillar of Benfica's defense for the past five seasons will need to be replaced by another veteran center back who can provide a calming presence to their young backline.

Club president Rui Costa faces mounting pressure to stabilize the squad. While the unbeaten record offers pride, third place and European demotion represent a sobering reality of how it does not mean a thing. Benfica must now regroup for the 2026-27 season quickly if they hope to turn historic resilience into future silverware and a return back to Europe's top competition.

Benfica open to offers for right back Amar Dedic after World Cup

Benfica Blog
Once the dust settles after World Cup 2026, Benfica are reportedly open to entertain serious offers for their impressive young right-back, Amar Dedic. The 23-year-old Bosnian international has enjoyed a breakout season in Portugal, catching the eye of several top European clubs with his dynamic performances.

Benfica acquired Dedic from Red Bull Salzburg in July 2025 for approximately €12 million. The versatile defender, who can also feature on the left, has a contract until 2030 with a €50 million release clause. Previously a product of Salzburg’s academy (with loans at Wolfsberger and Marseille), Dedic quickly established himself as a key figure at Estadio da Luz.

In the 2025-26 campaign, Dedic has been a revelation. He has made over 20 league starts, contributing 1 goal and 4 assists in Portuguese League action while logging significant minutes across domestic and European competitions. Known for his attacking overlaps, defensive solidity and stamina, his displays have bolstered Benfica’s backline and added width in transitions.

Premier League heavyweights Manchester City have been strongly linked, with reports of interest dating back to January and bids potentially going as high as €60 million. Liverpool have also been mentioned, while Fenerbahce and Atletico Madrid have shown recent interest.

With Benfica historically adept at profitable sales, a big money exit will fund further squad rebuilding and the club is hoping for a breakout performance by Dedic at World Cup 2026 before they start listening to offers. For Dedic, a move to a top club would mark another step in his rapid rise. Fans will watch closely as the summer transfer window rolls in.

Benfica on way to becoming The Unbeatable Three

Benfica Blog

As the 2025-26 Portuguese League season reaches its climax, Benfica stands on the brink of a remarkable achievement. With one match remaining, the Eagles are unbeaten across 33 league games, 22 wins and 11 draws, boasting a solid goal difference. It's a defensive masterclass and testament to squad resilience under pressure.

Yet, football's cruelty shines through on the season. Despite this flawless record, Benfica are set to finish third in Portugal. Porto have clinched the title, while Sporting just edged them on points in Week 33. An undefeated campaign that would normally spark title parades will instead end potentially in Europa League qualification. The "what if" lingers heavily as a single slip avoided could have presented different results in the standings but instead it look to be a season that has slipped away.

Enter Jose Mourinho. The man once dubbed "The Special One" for his transformative brilliance at FC Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid now he looks to author a different legacy at his boyhood club. Leading Benfica to an unbeaten league season cements his tactical genius once more. From parking the bus to orchestrating controlled dominance, Mourinho has turned potential fragility into ironclad consistency but what he could soon be known as is "The Unbeatable Three", the coach who delivered an invincible domestic run yet watched the ultimate prizes evade him to finish third.

It's a paradoxical crown, historic but bittersweet. Missing the Champions League would sting deeply. The revenue gap between it and the Europa League is massive. The Champions League phase alone brings tens of millions in prize money and broadcasting rights that Benfica desperately needs for squad investment. The Europa League offers prestige and a path, but lacks the financial firepower and glamour of Europe's elite competition. For a club of Benfica's stature, it's a costly missed opportunity that could impact recruitment and squad depth next season.

Mourinho's future remains uncertain amid Real Madrid links, but this unbeaten feat ensures his Benfica chapter will be remembered. Special? Undoubtedly. Undefeated? Absolutely. Triumphant? Not quite for The Unbeatable Third.

Benfica have eyes set on trio of managers if Mourinho departs

Benfica Blog
As speculation goes into overdrive around Jose Mourinho’s potential return to Real Madrid this summer, Benfica are already preparing for life after the Special One. The Portuguese giants have reportedly drawn up a shortlist of coaching talents, that include current Fulham bench boss Marco Silva, ex-Manchester United and Sporting manager Ruben Amorim and former Flamengo coach Filipe Luis.

Marco Silva has impressed at Fulham since 2021, stabilizing the club in the Premier League after winning the EFL Championship in 2021-22. The 47-year-old has previously won the Greek Super League with Olympiacos (2015-16), the Taca de Portugal with Sporting (2014-15) and the Segunda Liga with Estoril (2011-12). His pragmatic, attacking style and experience navigating mid-table Premier League battles make him a sensible, low-risk option for Benfica.

Ruben Amorim remains one of Portugal’s brightest managerial prospects despite his challenging spell at Manchester United. At Sporting, he delivered two Portuguese League titles (2020-21, 2023-24), along with two Taca da Liga triumphs and a Portuguese Super Cup. His high-pressing, fluid 3-4-3 system transformed Sporting into consistent champions and earned him widespread praise. A return to Lisbon could see him return to his former club in which he captured three league titles as a player.

Filipe Luis, a club legend as a player, has enjoyed a meteoric rise as a coach. In a short time at Flamengo, he secured major silverware including the 2025 Copa Libertadores, a Brazilian League title and a Copa do Brasil. His tactical acumen and leadership have drawn European interest. Bringing the former left-back to Europe would inject passion and a different set of fresh ideas.

With Mourinho potentially departing for Madrid, Benfica must choose between proven domestic success (Amorim), steady Premier League know-how (Silva), or inspirational foreign momentum (Filipe Luís). Whoever comes into the club will face huge expectations to restore the Eagles’ dominance. The summer promises to be an entertaining one as Benfica look to find the successful piece of the puzzle.

Benfica control destiny with two games to go for second spot

Benfica Blog

Benfica control their own destiny for second place with two games to go in the 2025-26 Portuguese League and the final stretch at hand. Benfica sit tied with Sporting on points in second place with 76 points each from 32 matches. Under Jose Mourinho, the Eagles remain unbeaten in the league to date which is a remarkable achievement but will not win the title. If they remain unbeaten in their final two game it would equal their 1977-78 season which saw the club go undefeated and also lose the title to Porto.

With two fixtures remaining, Benfica control their own destiny for a crucial runners-up finish. They hold the head-to-head advantage over Sporting if the two clubs are to finish even in points. Winning both games would seal second place and secure direct Champions League qualification for next season, rewarding their defensive solidity and consistency.

The final matches offer a chance to complete an historic invincible campaign, boosting morale ahead of European commitments. Finishing second also adds intrigue with Aston Villa now in the Europa League Final. A victory by Aston Villa would hand them the trophy and a spot in next season’s Champions League league phase but if the club automatically qualifies through a Top 4 spot in the Premier League then Portugal's runner up will enter the League phase of the competition directly.

Benfica fans will be watching Villa closely while focusing on securing their domestic league's second place. Two wins stand between them and a strong platform for next season. The Eagles’ fate remains in their own hands and with games at home to Braga (Week 33) and on the road against Estoril (Week 34) a winning finish would push Sporting aside.

Benfica eye experienced free agent Stefan de Vrij as potential Otamendi successor

Benfica Blog
As league seasons start to wrap up, Benfica have emerged as strong contenders to sign veteran Dutch centre-back Stefan de Vrij on a free transfer this summer. The 34-year-old Inter Milan defender is set to become a free agent at the conclusion of the season when his contract expires. Reports coming out of Italy indicate Benfica, alongside Olympiacos and a few other European clubs, are said to have already made offers for the experienced defender.

De Vrij could perfectly slot in to replace club captain Nicolas Otamendi, whose current deal also runs out at the end of the season. The Argentine veteran has been a stalwart since joining from Manchester City in 2020, but age and a change in direction at the club may open the door for a high-quality, cost-effective replacement.

Born in 1992, the tall right-footed defender boasts an impressive career. He rose through Feyenoord’s academy, making 135 league appearances before moving to Lazio in the summer of 2014 for €7 million. He would then join Inter in the summer of 2018 on a free transfer, he has racked up over 210 Serie A appearances, scoring 12 goals, contributing to two Serie A titles in 2021 and 2024 and multiple Coppa Italia and Supercoppa wins.

Internationally, de Vrij has earned 79 caps for the Netherlands, scoring 4 goals and featuring in major tournaments. Known for his aerial dominance, composure on the ball and leadership, he remains a reliable performer despite his age.

For Benfica, signing de Vrij would bring immediate defensive stability and a provide a veteran presence in the back four. It would be a smart move to refresh the backline while maintaining their competitiveness. Fans will be watching closely to see if the experienced Dutchman trades Milan for Lisbon over the summer months.

Benfica and Sporting share interest in Kairat Almaty keeper

Benfica Blog
In an interesting development, Benfica are said to have set their sights on promising 22-year-old, Kairat Almaty's keeper Temirlan Anarbekov. The young shot-stopper has turned heads with his standout performances during this seasons UEFA Champions League, delivering crucial saves and showing composure well beyond his years against some of Europe's top clubs.

According to reports from Kazakh media, Benfica are said to be serious about acquiring Anarbekov, but they will face stiff competition from city rivals Sporting. The Lisbon derby dynamic adds extra spice to the pursuit of the Kazakh keeper as both Portuguese giants battle for a high-upside talent who could become a long-term solution between the posts. Acquiring him wouldn’t break the bank as estimates suggest a fee in the low millions with likely add-ons could be enough to secure his services.

This move appears tied to Benfica’s plans for their current starting keeper Anatoliy Trubin. The Ukrainian international has attracted significant Premier League attention, with Benfica reportedly open to cashing in on the soon to be 25-year-old who has a price tag in the €40 million range. Selling Trubin at that price would provide substantial funds to reinvest in the squad and hand Anarbekov the reigns as the club's new starting keeper.

This move has the classic Benfica strategy of acquiring a player for a low cost and developing them to sell higher in the future. Whether the Eagles can pip rivals Sporting remains to be seen, but the battle for Anarbekov's signature promises to be an intriguing off field battle in the coming weeks between two of Portugal's top clubs.

Benfica make u-turn on Mourinho future with club after Real Madrid interest

Benfica Blog
As the 2025/26 season enters its final stretch, Benfica president Rui Costa is reportedly pushing to secure the long-term future of manager Jose Mourinho amid growing speculation linking the Special One with a sensational return to Real Madrid. Mourinho, who returned to the Estadio da Luz in September 2025, is currently contracted to Benfica until June 2027.

However, the deal includes a break clause that allows either party to terminate the agreement in the 10 days following the final match of this season. This effectively means Mourinho could depart the club for free or for a relatively low compensation fee according to some reports, if no new agreement is reached. According to recent reports, Mourinho has already submitted a detailed proposal for a contract extension, signalling his desire to remain at Benfica beyond the current terms and his desire to get the club to the Champions League.

Yet President Rui Costa has so far preferred to honour the existing deal, creating a subtle but noticeable tension behind the scenes. With Real Madrid president Florentino Perez said to view Mourinho as his preferred candidate to replace interim coach Alvaro Arbeloa, the pressure is mounting on Benfica’s board. Costa, who brought Mourinho back to the club, now faces a critical decision, does he offer the experienced tactician the security and improved terms he seeks, or risk losing one of the most charismatic figures in world football on a potentially a free exit this summer.

For Benfica fans, the coming weeks will be decisive. Can Rui Costa convince Mourinho that his project at the Eagles is worth committing to long-term, or will the pull of another spell at the Santiago Bernabeu prove too strong to resist. The two sides are talking and a decision will come one way or another, we will just need to find out which direction the decision goes goes in the coming weeks.

Benfica look towards Brazil and Gremio center back

Benfica Blog
Benfica are interested in Gremio center back Viery and are said to be the main European club in pursuit of the 21-year-old with a move potentially taking place this summer.

Viery has broken into Gremio's starting eleven this season and has impressed with his performances; the fact that he is a left-footed center back adds to his value. He is signed until 2029 and although the Brazilian club is open to selling, they have set a valuation on the player of €25 million for negotiations.

Benfica views the talent as a long-term investment to bolster their backline. However, Benfica does have competition, with Premier League sides Brighton and Newcastle also being linked to the player.

Benfica wants to secure the talented youngster before his valuation skyrockets. As the product of Gremio's youth system, Viery is the prototypical center back with composure on the ball, aerial strength and the versatility to play as a left back if needed.

UEFA suspends Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni for 6 games

Benfica Blog
UEFA has announced the suspension of Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni for six matches following an incident against Real Madrid's Vinicious Junior in the first leg of their Champions League knockout play-off in February 2026. The 20-year-old Argentine was found guilty today of homophobic discriminatory conduct.

Vinicius had alleged he was subjected to racist abuse,  with teammate Kylian Mbappe claiming to have overheard the repeated insults. The match was halted briefly amid the claims. Prestianni denied using racial slurs towards anyone and in his meeting with UEFA admitted the words used were homophobic rather than racist.

After completing their investigation UEFA handed Prestianni a six-match ban for homophobic conduct. Three of those matches are suspended subject to a two-year probationary period. Prestianni has already served one game, having missed the second leg against Real Madrid and will be subject to sit two more UEFA matches.

Benfica interested in Palmeiras striker for summer move

Benfica Blog
Benfica have emerged as serious contenders for Palmeiras striker Flaco Lopez, with reports indicating the Portuguese club is weighing a summer move for the 25-year-old Argentine striker as Jose Mourinho is said to be a big fan of the player.

Under Abel Ferreira at Palmeiras, Lopez has flourished as a versatile centre-forward capable of dropping deep or leading the line. His impressive form has caught the eye of European scouts, positioning him as a potential reinforcement for Benfica’s attack. Palmeiras value Flaco very highly and are said to want as much as €40 million to move on for the player, reflecting his contract until 2029 and strong recent performances.

Interest in Flaco Lopez extends beyond Benfica, with Bologna and Atletico Madrid also monitoring the striker, while Premier League sides like Brentford and Everton have made enquiries, highlighting his growing reputation across Europe. In 2026, Flaco has scored 9 goals and provided 6 assists in 24 appearances across all competitions, including solid contributions in the Serie A Brasileiro and the Copa Libertadores.

Last Season Flaco had an excellent campaign with 25 goals and 6 assists in 64 matches, cementing his status as one of South America’s rising strikers and earning his first call up to Argentina's national side in October 2025. With his physical presence, finishing, and link-up play, Flaco Lopez could be a smart addition for Benfica if they meet Palmeiras’ valuation. A move to Europe seems likely with a destination still unknown.

Benfica get a major victory over Sporting in Lisbon Derby

Benfica Blog
In a pulsating Lisbon Derby at Estadio Jose Alvalade today, Benfica delivered a dramatic 2-1 victory over hosts Sporting in Portuguese League action, dealing a significant blow to the Lions' title hopes while reigniting their own challenge to catch Sporting for second spot.

The match began with high tension. Luis Suarez missed a penalty for Sporting in the 19th minute, but the visitors quickly recovered. Andreas Schjelderup stepped up confidently from the spot in the 27th minute, slotting home to give Benfica a 1-0 halftime lead after a composed finish under pressure. Sporting dominated possession in the second half and found an equalizer in the 72nd minute when Hidemasa Morita rose to head home a precise cross, sending the home crowd into frenzy and leveling the score at 1-1.

As the clock ticked into stoppage time, Benfica produced a moment of magic. In the 93rd minute, just after a Sporting goal was ruled offside, Rafa Silva produced a moment of magic, latching onto a pass from Leandro Barreiro and firing a clinical strike past the Sporting goalkeeper to secure a 2-1 win. The late goal sparked wild celebrations among the visiting Benfica faithful. The result left Benfica in strong contention to fight for a spot in Champions League play, while Sporting, despite a spirited display, suffered a heartbreaking home defeat in one of Portuguese football's fiercest rivalries.

This result adds another thrilling chapter to the Lisbon Derby, with Benfica finally proving their mettle in a high-stakes clash. Mourinho's tactical discipline and late-game opportunism proved decisive in a match that will be remembered for its late game drama and Rafa's heroics.

Benfica youth exit in the semi-final stage of UEFA Youth League

Benfica Blog
Benfica suffered a disappointing 3-1 defeat to Club Brugge in the UEFA Youth League semi-finals on today. Despite entering as heavy favourites with a strong campaign scoring 38 goals, the Portuguese giants fell short on this day. Club Brugge took the lead through a saved penalty kick in the first half where the saved rebound unfortunately went right back to the spot kicker who found the back of the net.

Benfica missed a flurry of chances to bring the game level before the half which would prove costly as the game wore on. Two more goals by Brugge in the second half before a late own goal that went Benfica's way would be all the scoring in the game and Benfica bowed out of the competition in the final four stage.

This was Benfica's fifth appearance in the final four of the competition and the first time that they did not advance to the Finals. Benfica captured the UEFA Youth League crown in 2021-22 and are the only European Club to win the Under 20 Intercontinental Cup between Europe and South America youth champions in the summer of 2022.

Benfica show interest in Jagiellonia Bialystok midfielder

Benfica Blog
Benfica are showing strong interest in signing 19-year-old Polish attacking midfielder Bartosz Mazurek from Jagiellonia Białystok this summer, according to reports from journalist Piotr Kozminski. The youngster has burst onto the European scene with an impressive performance, scoring a hat trick in the UEFA Conference League against Fiorentina this season.

The right footed play maker joined Jagiellonia's main squad in early 2025 and has been a prominent player this season for the Polish side. His creativity, goal threat, and versatility in attacking roles have drawn scouts from across Europe.

Jagiellonia hold a strong negotiating position with Mazurek who has a contract until June 2028. A summer move could command a significantly hefty price tag on acquiring the Polish U19. Benfica are not alone in their interest with other clubs monitoring the youngster that include Fiorentina, Napoli, Premier League sides and even Portuguese rivals FC Porto.

A move to Lisbon would represent a major step up for Mazurek, offering  potential Champions League football and development under Benfica’s renowned academy system. Mourinho is looking for a revamp of the squad next season, more in his mold after inheriting a squad made for former bench boss Bruno Lage and Mazurek could be a major scoop for the Lisbon side.

Benfica monitoring Tromso's young midfielder

Benfica Blog
Benfica eyes Norwegian talent Jens Hjertø-Dahl as the club actively monitors the 20-year-old Tromso central midfielder as a potential summer signing for the 2026-27 season. The Norway U21 international has caught the attention of several European clubs, including West Ham, Wolves, Hamburg and city rivals Sporting, following a strong campaign in the Norwegian Eliteserien.

Hjerto-Dahl brings a rare physical presence to the midfield. His blend of attributes makes him an intriguing prospect for Jose Mourinho’s side. Technically refined for his size, the youngster excels in ball control and short dribbles to escape pressure. He carries the ball with purpose, progresses play effectively, and delivers quality long passes to get the attack going in the right direction.

Defensively, his strength in aerial duels, well-timed tackles and physicality in one-on-one situations add steel to the engine room. Offensively, he contributes with a powerful mid-range shot and intelligent positioning, offering a threat on goal from a long distance. For Benfica, Hjertø-Dahl could provide depth and dynamism in central areas, complementing the squad’s technical players with his athleticism and composure.

A cost-effective, high-upside addition, he fits the club’s strategy of investing in promising talents who are ready to develop in Lisbon’s demanding environment. With competition heating up, Benfica must act decisively if they wish to secure this rising Scandinavian star.

Signed with Tromso into 2029, the 20 year old is said to have a price tag in the €13 million to €15 million range for potential suitors this summer. Look for Benfica to get ahead of the pack early as they look to enforce their squad for next season.

Designing a home jersey for Benfica's 2026-27 season

Benfica Blog
Benfica prepares for the 2026-27 season, the iconic red home jersey remains a symbol of passion and tradition for "As Aguias." Club guidelines established in recent years mandate a predominantly red shirt, paired with white shorts and red or black socks, while preserving the full-color crest. This foundation allows adidas, the long-time kit partner, to innovate without straying from heritage.

One exciting concept draws inspiration from Benfica's street football roots, evident in the 2025-26 kits. Imagine a deep crimson base with subtle tonal eagle-wing patterns woven into the fabric, creating texture and movement reminiscent of the Vhils collaboration.

Black accents on a rounded collar and sleeve cuffs add sharpness, while three white adidas stripes grace the shoulders. A vintage goal graphic with "SLB" could appear faintly on the lower back, nodding to community origins. A bolder variation incorporates modern technology with heritage flair.

The Glorious Eagles decided to get creative an provide some ideas for the home jersey for next season while trying to maintain a classic and artistic design that we know fans love.

Design 1: A classic all red jersey with white trim on the neck and sleeves, you can't get a nice simpler look.

Design 2: An old school style that includes a collar, the jersey includes red as the majority color but a bit more white is added throughout the jersey in just the right places.

Design 3: The least likely of the three to be on the field next season but you just have to like the red and white stripe, its bold and could become an instant favourite.

Benfica season looks to be over after another missed chance

Benfica Blog

Benfica’s frustrating 1-1 draw against bottom-half side Casa Pia on Monday night has dealt a potentially fatal blow to their 2025-26 Portuguese League title hopes. With just six matches remaining, the Eagles sit third on 66 points, trailing leaders Porto by seven and second-placed Sporting by two who have a game in hand.

Richard Rios gave Benfica a 68th-minute lead, but Rafael Brito’s 78th-minute equalizer for the hosts exposed familiar defensive lapses and a lack of cutting edge. What should have been a routine three points against a relegation threatened opponent turned into two dropped points that may prove decisive.

The gap to the top is now likely insurmountable unless both Porto and Sporting suffer major collapses. Even a perfect run from Benfica would leave them reliant on favours from rivals. With the title race slipping away, Benfica will need to look at themselves as a club in their final six league games.

Focus now should urgently shift to securing second place and the associated Champions League qualification. Consistency over the final stretch, starting with sharper finishing and greater defensive solidity, will be vital to avoid an even bigger collapse. For a club of Benfica’s stature, finishing third would represent a disappointing season and potential undefeated league season.

Benfica top world rankings of most profitable academy

Benfica have competition on signing of Otamendi

Benfica Blog
Benfica are keen to retain experienced captain Nicolas Otamendi for another season as his current deal with the Portuguese giants expires in June 2026. The 38-year-old Argentine centre-back has been a rock at the heart of defence since arriving from Manchester City in 2020, captaining the side and delivering consistent performances in Portuguese League and European competitions.

Club officials value his leadership and professionalism, with reports indicating Benfica are preparing an offer to extend his contract by one more year. Otamendi remains a key figure in Jose Mourinho’s plans, bringing stability to a squad aiming for domestic and continental success.

However, interest from his homeland has resurfaced. River Plate are monitoring the situation closely, viewing the veteran as a potential free-agent reinforcement. The Buenos Aires club see Otamendi’s quality and experience as ideal for strengthening their backline, especially with his well-known affection for the Millonarios. Otamendi has kept his options open, stating he will decide after the current campaign and the 2026 World Cup.

While loyal to Benfica, the pull of a return to his homeland of Argentina adds intrigue to Otamendi and his family. For now, the Eagles are pushing hard to keep their captain but will want to remain within budget on any new contract.

Benfica hit by UEFA punishment over fans behaviour

Benfica Blog
UEFA has handed out their punishment to Benfica for their fans behaviour during their Champions League clash against Real Madrid in the first leg of their playoff contest at the Estadio da Luz.

Benfica had been sanctioned by UEFA with financial penalties and a suspended partial stadium closure. The incidents arose towards Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior who was targeted by the clubs fans with racist and/or discriminatory behaviour.

Could NEC Nijmegen midfielder be the answer for Benfica?

Benfica Blog
Benfica could look toward NEC Nijmegen’s rising star Kodai Sano as they look to bolster their midfield ahead of the 2026/27 season.

The 22-year-old Japanese international has exploded onto the scene in the Eredivisie, drawing Premier League and European interest after rejecting big-money bids in January. Sano joined NEC from J2 League side Fagiano Okayama in August 2023 for just €500,000
.

The then 19-year-old had already shown promise in Japan, featuring regularly in the second tier with solid ball progression and defensive metrics. In his debut Eredivisie campaign (2023/24), he quickly adapted, logging key appearances and building toward his breakout 2025/26 season, where he has started 28 league matches, scoring 3 goals and providing 7 assists while averaging over 7.6 in player ratings.

Sano could cost Benfica €15-18 million including add-ons, a reasonable fee for a young, high-upside talent with a contract until 2028. His biggest strengths lie in his dynamic box-to-box profile, elite dribbling and vision to break lines, strong passing range, ball interception and tireless defensive work rate.

Versatile enough for central or attacking midfield roles, the right-footed dynamo excels at turning defense into attack with sharp transitions and distance shooting.

If Benfica can secure Sano this summer, he’d add another piece of youthful energy and technical quality to Jose Mourinho’s project, potentially becoming a long-term star at the Estadio da Luz as Benfica look towards silverware in the 2026-27 season.

Benfica look to make UEFA Youth League Final Four again

Benfica Blog
Benfica will travel to Italy to take on Inter Milan today in the quarter-final stage of the UEFA Youth League at the KONAMI Football Centre as the club looks to make the Final Four of the competition once again.

Benfica currently hold the competition records for most final fours, most matches played at 70 and biggest win in the Finals, a 6-0 defeat of Red Bull Salzburg in 2022, when they lifted the trophy of the competition for the first time.

Benfica have reached three other Finals in the competition, losing in 2014, 2017 and 2020. The Portuguese club's ability to produce young talent at their academy that go on to shine at the senior level is legendary.

The club will not have it easy in a one leg knockout today but they go to Milan full of confidence as they look to make it five final fours in the history of the competition. Cross town rivals Sporting will take on Real Madrid in the other quarter-final today in hopes of getting two Portuguese clubs into the Final Four.

Mourinho handed two match ban by Portuguese League

Benfica Blog
In a dramatic turn during last Sunday's Portuguese League blockbuster, Jose Mourinho received a red card in Benfica's intense 2-2 draw against FC Porto, his former club where he famously won the Champions League.

The incident occurred in stoppage time after Benfica's late equalizer, when Mourinho left his technical area and was accused of kicking a ball toward Porto's substitutes' bench in celebration and was shown a red card.

Tensions escalated as Mourinho clashed with Porto assistant coach Lucho Gonzalez, whom he accused of repeatedly calling him a "traitor" in the tunnel. Mourinho defended his loyalty, questioning what he had "betrayed" after giving his all to Porto years ago.

The Portuguese Football Federation's disciplinary council has ruled, a one-match ban for the red card, plus an additional 11-day suspension, effecting another game for provoking the confrontation. This two-match ban means Mourinho will miss one more game after sitting out today's 2-1 come from behind win by Benfica over Arouca.

Benfica title hopes on life support

Benfica Blog
The Classico at Estadio da Luz this past weekend ended in a pulsating 2-2 draw, keeping Benfica's unbeaten streak intact at 25 matches but a needed victory against league leaders FC Porto failed to materialize the result that was needed to bring the title race to within four points.

With just nine league games remaining, Benfica are still mathematically in the race but their chance of capturing the Portuguese League crown is now on life support as the club will need some help if they are to leap over two clubs before the end of this campaign.

Realistically, Benfica must win out and hope their rivals falter, the draw preserved the campaign but the club will need many things to go their way, including a crucial away clash against Sporting who currently sit in second, three points ahead of the Eagles. The fans have faith but their persistence will be tested in the final games of the season.

Benfica need a victory in O Classico against FC Porto

Benfica Blog
As the 2025-26 Portuguese League season reaches its critical phase, Benfica faces a pivotal "O Classico" against arch-rivals FC Porto this Sunday, March 8, at the Estadio da Luz. Entering Week 25 in a 34 week season, the Eagles simply cannot afford to drop points if they hope to challenge for the title.

Currently sitting in third place with 58 points from 24 matches (17 wins, 7 draws, 0 losses), Benfica trails leaders FC Porto (65 points) and second-place Sporting (61 points). A win would narrow the gap, especially with Benfica's impressive unbeaten streak and solid defense, conceding just 14 goals in the league this season.

FC Porto holds a historical edge in these encounters, beyond points, this match is about momentum and morale going into the final few weeks of the season. A Benfica defeat could widen the divide, allowing their rivals to pull further move away. For Benfica fans worldwide, this is a statement game as a victory here would reignite their title drive shrinking Porto's lead to four points.

Benfica remain unbeaten in league but sit third

Benfica Blog
Benfica sit in a rare and odd position, having yet to lose in league action after 24 weeks in the season but the club sit in third place seven points behind league leaders FC Porto, thanks to seven draws that have cost the club fourteen points.

Benfica are joined at this stage of the season by Fenerbahce, Slavia Prague and FK Vadar as clubs that have played at minimum 20 games in their respective leagues and remain undefeated in their league campaigns but surprisingly Fenerbahce are also not in top spot in Turkey at this stage of the season.

Benfica have a huge home game this coming weekend in an O Classico as they host league leaders FC Porto with anything short of a victory being considered a blown opportunity with just 10 games left in the season and the club looking to cut the deficit for top spot.

The last time a club went undefeated in a season and failed to capture the league title was during the 2007-08 season when Red Star Belgrade lost the title to rivals Partizan Belgrade. Benfica did have an undefeated season in 1977-78 and also lost the league title that year on a tie breaker to FC Porto.

Benfica need to find attacking midfielder this summer

Benfica Blog
Benfica have lacked a midfielder with line breaking passes this season and need to find this addition this summer during the transfer window if they are to add another form of threat into their attack.

The club was hoping this player would have been summer addition Georgiy Sudakov but the 23 year old Ukrainian international has been used in various positions due to injuries and has not provided what was expected when the club acquired him from Shakhtar Donetsk.

A player that could add what the club needs is soon to be 25 year old Croatian international Toni Fruk, he currently applies his trade with HNK Rijeka and has been a key member of the squad's run to the UEFA Conference League round of 16, scoring four goals in the competition.

Benfica may have to pay more than double what Rijeka paid Fiorentina this past summer to acquire Fruk which was €4 million. In over 2,827 minutes of action, Fruk has scored 13 goals across all competitions while providing three helpers.

Fruk is the classic #10, a left footed play maker, he acts as the primary creative engine from the midfield with excellent close control. Fruk is considered the modern attacking midfielder of today. Benfica's troubling season has seen them fail to move the ball effectively through the middle of the field and Fruk could be the solution to solving this piece.

Benfica out of Champions League after gutsy performance

Benfica Blog

In the electrifying second leg of the Champions League playoff, Benfica showcased sheer guts and determination against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Trailing 1-0 from the first leg, Benfica struck first in the 14th minute when Rafa Silva tapped in the opening goal, leveling the aggregate and stunning the hosts but that lasted all but two minutes as Real responded swiftly with Aurelien Tchouameni's equalizer.

Benfica though refused to crumble and they continued to press relentlessly, creating chances and testing Thibaut Courtois, embodying the fighting spirit that defines the club but Vinicius Junior's 80th-minute winner sealed a 2-1 defeat and a 3-1 aggregate win as Real advanced to the last 16.

Benfica showed their potential against the Spanish powerhouse but it was not meant to be and they exit the Champions Leagues with €53.1 million in their coffers and will now turn their attention to the Portuguese League as the look to fight for the title.

Benfica looking for some magic at the Bernabeu

Benfica Blog
As Benfica heads to the iconic Santiago Bernabeu for the second leg of their Champions League knockout playoff against Real Madrid tomorrow, the Eagles are chasing a miracle. Trailing 1-0 from the first leg at Lisbon, where Vinicius Jr.'s lone goal proved to be the winner, a Jose Mourinho-less side faces an uphill battle against the 15-time European champions.

The first leg was marred by controversy, with Benfica midfielder Gianluca Prestianni suspended for the game due to alleged racial abuse toward Vinicius in the first leg, while Mourinho himself is banned from sideline after a pair of quick yellow cards due to abuse of the match official.

Yet, Benfica are looking to stun their Spanish rivals again after a 4-2 league phase victory over Madrid just weeks ago, where they dismantled the Galacticos at home. Can the Portuguese giants find just a little more magic on this night and make a statement across Europe.

Benfica look to get on track with league game

Benfica Blog
After what has been a crazy 72 hours, Benfica look to turn their attention to Week 23 action against AVS at the Luz tomorrow before traveling to Madrid for the second leg of the Champions League playoff against Real Madrid on Wednesday.

The Lisbon club has come under increased scrutiny due to a launched UEFA investigation into winger Gianluca Prestianni who was accused by Vinicius Junior of saying a racist remark towards him. Prestianni has already presented his side of the story to UEFA investigators and a decision on the outcome of the investigation should come shortly.

Jose Mourinho spoke briefly with Benfica TV earlier today and says that the club is focused on this weekend's game with AVS but admitted that it has not been easy since the 51st minute on of the Real Madrid game both emotionally with what happened and what is still happening.

Benfica lose in Champions League in a game with a chaotic second half

Benfica Blog
The Benfica and Real Madrid first leg Champions League playoff at the Luz yesterday, delivered high drama but ultimately ended in a narrow 1-0 victory for the visitors on this night.

Real Madrid will now take a crucial advantage back home next week, thanks to a stunning second half strike from winger Vinicius Junior after a tense and cagey first half. Benfica under Mourinho's guidance showed defensive resilience against Madrid's star studded attack but were unable to capitalize on the chances that arose.

Benfica pressed selectively but struggled to create clear chances, with their midfield failing to impose control or transition effectively into attacking phases of the field. The midfield duo of Fredrik Aursnes and Leandro Barreiro failed regularly to link play, leaving forwards isolated and allowing Madrid 58% of the possession in the game.

The game ignited early in the second half when Vinicius Junior curled a magnificent effort into the top corner in the 50th minute. The goal sparked chaos as Vinicius's celebration appeared to antagonize the home crowd, leading to allegations of racial abuse by Benfica player Gianluca Prestianni towards Vinicious.

Referee Francois Letexier halted play for around 10 minutes, invoking UEFA's anti-racism protocol. Tensions would boil over during this stoppage, as a Benfica staff member was handed a red-card, while heated exchanges erupted on the sidelines and field between both players and coaching staff, Mourinho would even speak one on one with Vinicius in an attempt to calm things.

The second half would resume, with Benfica pushing for an equalizer but hampered by their midfield's inability to build continued coherent attacks. The climax would then come in the 85th minute, as Mourinho, furious over perceived leniency toward Real Madrid players, accused officials of holding back yellow cards on Madrid players like Tchouameni, Huijsen, Vinicius and others.

Two quick yellows followed for dissent, resulting in a red card that sent Mourinho to the stands. He will now miss the return leg to Bernabeau in what was a chaotic second half that turned shameful on many fronts. The tie still hangs in the balance, but the Luz night will be remembered more for controversy than what was an exceptional game of footballing brilliance.
