Benfica lose Classico to Porto at home

Benfica lose their first game of the season at home in the Classico against FC Porto. The loss was Bruno Lage's first league loss since taking over the managerial reins for the club in January of 2018. Benfica played one of their worse games in the Bruno Lage era and were soundly outworked and out classed in this game by a hungrier club. Porto opened the scoring in the first half on a goal by newcomer Ze Luis and doubled their mark in the second half as Marega scored close to the final whistle for a final score of 2-0.

This is only the third league game of the season so there is still plenty to play for but the encounter left many fans wondering why the club looked unprepared for their league rival and a bigger question is if a change is needed up front to the starting eleven as Seferovic and de Tomas have yet to gel. Benfica also suffered the loss of midfielder Chiquinho who looks to have suffered a leg injury, more will be known in the next 48 hours on the extent of the injury. Chiquinho has been a bright spot for the club this season adding a spark every time he has come off the bench. Benfica will need to lick their wounds and make their adjustments as the head on the road for another tough encounter against Braga in Week 4.

Sao Paulo has a €50M buy out clause on Morato and have already made it public that they have no intentions of selling the player for anything less. Morato arrived in Sao Paulo in 2016 from Portuguesa but has yet to make an appearance for Sao Paulo's main squad. Nuno Tavares will retain his right back spot for this weekends upcoming "O Classico" against FC Porto. The 19 year old Tavares who has appeared in Benfica's first two league games and the season opening Super Cup in place of an injured Andre Almeida has not looked out of place even though he normally plays on the left side of the field. Tavares has contributed a goal and two assists in his first three appearances with the squad while adding an impressive player rating of 7.92 in the first two league games of the season according to whoscored.com. Bernardo Silva expresses desire to play for Benfica

Manchester City and former Benfica academy player Bernardo Silva has expressed his desire to one day return to the club that still has his heart before he retires. Bernardo spent 12 years as a member of Benfica's youth system, first joining at the tender age of seven. Benfica moved Bernardo to Monaco in 2014 on loan with the attacking midfielder appearing in only three games for Benfica's main squad across all competitions before the loan. Monaco made the move permanent at the end of the 2014/15 season, with Benfica receiving €15.75M for the players rights.

Bernardo went on to win the French Ligue 1 title with Monaco ending PSG's dominance of the Ligue 1 crown and his performances earned him a move to Manchester City during the summer of 2017 for €50M were he has become an important member of Pep Guardiola's squad. Bernardo though still wants to fulfill a child home dream to play a season for Benfica before his career ends and on his own terms, which he is sure to accomplish without worrying about the club's manager trying to convert him to a left back. I am sure a move back to Benfica would not only please Bernardo but the Benfica supporters as well.

Man City were interested in Benfica youngster

Manchester City had Benfica youngster Florentino Luis on it's short list of players that they wanted to acquire to replace an aging Fernandinho. Pep's Man City side inquired about what it would take to acquire Florentino from Benfica before the close of the English league transfer window but Benfica's move to increase the 20 year old defensive midfielders buy out clause to €120M put off any deal being reached at this time for the promising youngster. Benfica are hoping to striker gold with Florentino as they did earlier this summer with forward Joao Felix and his appearances as a member of the starting eleven will have many team scouts watching his every move.

The tandem have been spectacular to start the season and Benfica managed to earn their second consecutive clean sheet to start the season. Next up for Benfica will be "O Classico" against FC Porto at the Estadio da Luz on August 24.

Reports say that their are currently two European clubs interested in Cervi but no formal offers have been made for his services. Benfica would move Cervi for no less then €15M and would also be open at letting Cervi move on a season long loan with an option to buy.

Benfica move into pot 2 of Champions League draw

Benfica have moved into pot 2 of the Champions League group stage draw at the expense of country rivals FC Porto. Porto's elimination at the hands of Krasnodar earlier this week have guaranteed that Benfica will be placed in pot 2 along with Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Tottenham, Napoli, Dortmund and Shakhtar Donetsk with either Ajax or Lyon earning the final ball in the pot. Benfica's chances of moving on to the Round of 16 have also increased as pot 3 would have seen the club face one of the clubs mentioned along with some of Europe's power house clubs.
The Champions League group stage games will commence in September.

Mile Svilar sees some action with B side

Benfica keeper Mile Svilar who has been rumoured all summer with a loan move back to his homeland of Belgium, appeared in action with Benfica's B side during the opening weekend of the Portuguese second division. Svilar was the starter in the B sides 2-1 victory over Estoril to start off their campaign. It is unclear where Svilar will end up this season but a spot on the main squad looks to be highly unlikely barring an injury.

Benfica being linked to Peru International

According to the agent of Peruvian International Miguel Araujo, Benfica have been in conversations with the 24 year old's club Alianza Lima to acquire the central defenders services for this season. Benfica have been linked to Araujo in the past as the Lisbon side looked to acquire his services a couple of years back but failed to come to an agreement then. Araujo spent last season on loan with Argentinian side Talleres and would like a move to Europe this summer with a couple of other European squads also being linked for his services. There is no report at this time of what it would cost Benfica to acquire Araujo but the speculation is that his agent is looking to drive the price up by releasing information to media.

Benfica are looking for a club that want to take right back Tyronne Ebuehi on loan for the season as they look to find the 23 year old Ebuehi some regular playing time this year. Benfica open campaign with thumping of Pacos

Benfica opened defense of their Portuguese league title with a 5-0 thumping of newly promoted Pacos Ferreira in front of a home crowd of over 62,000 fans at the Estadio da Luz. Benfica opened the scoring with a "Golaco" from young right back Nuno Tavares who picked out the top corner from a good 40 meters out. Benfica was then awarded a kick from the penalty spot when Pacos defender Bruno Santos got his hand on a cross into the box for Raul de Tomas and Pizzi stepped up to the penalty spot, converting to double the lead and it remained this way until half time. Pacos Ferreira's

Bernardo Martins then received his second yellow card with twenty five minutes left in the game, putting Pacos down to ten men. Benfica would capitalize on this with three goals in a fourteen minute span, as last seasons leading scorer Seferovic would get on the board finishing a nifty pass from substitute Chiquinho. Pizzi followed with his second of the game after a master class of passing from Nuno Tavares and Chiquinho set the midfielder alone on the keeper. Newly acquired Carlos Vinicius rounded out the scoring converting a pass from Nuno Tavares after entering the game six minutes prior. Benfica will next face Belenenses on the road next weekend in a Lisbon Derby.

Benfica loan striker Jose Gomes to Portimonense

Benfica have loaned 20 year old striker Jose Gomes to Portimonense for the season. The once highly regarded prospect has seen many of his teammates at Seixal pass him on the clubs ranking of prospects, but he will be looking for a fresh start on a Portimonense squad with some fire power up front. A member of Portugal's Euro U17 championship squad in 2016, Gomes lead the tournament in scoring with 7 goals and was named to the team of the tournament. That performance lead to him appearing in his first game for the main squad in September of that same year, Gomes appeared in a total of 5 games for Benfica during the 2016/17 season one of which included a Champions League appearance. Since then Gomes has not made an appearance for the main squad and his playing time has diminished over the years with him starting off most of the Benfica B games as a substitute. Benfica hope that Gomes can rekindle a once promising career with a bit more regular minutes at Portimonense.

Gabriel suffered the injury in Benfica's Super Cup victory over Sporting this past Sunday which saw the midfielder substituted in the 82nd minute of the game. Gabriel suffered a sprained left knee in April of the past season that ended his campaign early. Gabriel's second trip to the infirmary in less then 6 months have Benfica second guessing if they should let defensive midfielder Fejsa leave the club during the current transfer window and the club could hold on to the Serbian as insurance.

Sporting's best chances for a goal came from the foot of star midfielder Bruno Fernandes who made sure that Benfica keeper Vladchodimos made a couple of outstanding stops to keep Sporting off the scoreboard.
